Today I saw the movie Hugo. My friend suggested it. I wasn’t so keen on seeing it because I thought it was a children‘s movie and it didn’t get the best reviews. However, I picked the last couple of movies I’ve seen with friends so I let her choose it for once. I’m glad I did! It was such a nice movie with a great message for both children and adults.
Hugo is a period piece set in 1930s Paris. Hugo is the title character, a young orphan boy who lives in the Paris train station. His dad died in a fire and left him with an unfinished automaton, a humanlike machine, that Hugo wants to fix in order to hopefully discover one last message from his father.
In order to survive and to fix the automaton, he steals from one man’s toy shop. The man in turn takes away his notebook with his precious notes about the automaton from his father. While trying to get it back, he meets Isabelle, the man’s goddaughter and befriends her. The friendship unlocks many secrets and leads to new discoveries that are life changing for everyone involved.
This is NOT just a children’s movie. This movie can definitely be enjoyed by children but, adults will appreciate it’s depth. I’m sure there are many themes besides this one in the movie but the theme I most admired was the theme that everyone in life is here for a purpose, we must find that purpose, and we must live it. How profound and how true! Everyone is significant. Everyone plays their part. Everyone is valuable and every difference is special in order to make the world work.

Movies based on books tend to be the best! Especially this year. And, happily, these movies are meant for the entire family, not just adults. That makes me very happy.
I’m also glad that the Golden Globes agree with me on this one. They’ve nominated “Hugo” for best motion picture. Another nominee is “Moneyball” (also based on a book), and “The Help” (a book!). Although I thoroughly enjoyed “Hugo”, out of the three movies I’ve seen from the list, I hope that “The Help” wins (I’m in love with that movie) and I suspect it will since I believe it is more “best picture material”. Yet this 3D masterpiece is definitely worth seeing and is definitely a close second favorite!
